Our mission is to ensure that the American tradition of summer camp continues, while avoiding preventable disasters and harm to children.
Who We Are
The Campaign for Camp Safety was launched by a coalition of parents of the 27 girls (“Heaven’s 27”) who lost their lives in the devastating flood at Camp Mystic on July 4, 2025. From the deepest grief has come a commitment: to ensure other families never suffer the same heartbreak and preventable loss.
What We Do
Together, we are building a movement to ensure every child is safe at summer camp. Our work focuses on three core areas:

Safety Standards
We identify the policies and best practices proven to prevent harm and save lives.

Advocacy
We work to make these best practice standards the law, so every camp is safe, not just some.

Safe Summers Fund
We provide resources and grants to help nonprofit summer camps put best practices into action, so safety isn’t just a mandate – it’s achievable.

Watch the recent TODAY Show segment featuring parents, many who also testified before a Senate committee on the “Heaven’s 27 Camp Safety Act” in memory of their daughters who died in the Camp Mystic floods. Their courage and advocacy on behalf of their girls and all children created the momentum to make the Campaign for Camp Safety a national movement.
Why We Need #CampSafetyNOW
Summer camps in America contribute an estimated $70 billion annually to the national economy. 26 million children participate in summer camps each year in the United States.* However, many camps operate without the safeguards families expect:
9 States
do not require that day camps be licensed
8 States
do not require that residential camps be licensed.
15 States
do not require that camps conduct criminal background checks on staff and volunteers.
Even in states with camp licensure, the regulations are far less rigorous than those governing schools or childcare centers.
The Campaign for Camp Safety is building a nationwide movement to ensure that summer camps are safe and fun. Youth camps can be wonderful places for growth, learning, and joy. They create lifelong memories and can unite communities across generations.
